11 February 2025 HRM Council Meeting: X, Alehouse & IMP

Hello All,

Here is a very brief commentary on our council meeting this week. I’d like to assemble a newsletter today too.

Our third council meeting of the year was held on Tuesday, 11 February. The full meeting agenda, reports and video recording are linked below.

Halifax Regional Council – February 11, 2025

Item 13.2 Petitions

Many initiatives were discussed both in public and in camera, but nothing on the agenda was specific to District 7 except the petition I submitted on behalf of the Heritage Trust of NS On Tuesday, the petition had ~2800 signatures. Today it has 4040 signatures.

Here is the update I posted about the Alehouse Status on Wednesday. I’m still waiting on a meeting with the building owner, which will occur after staff have a change to discuss options with him.

Item 15.3.1 Councillor White – Removal of X as a Social Media Platform for HRM

My first motion brought forward to council passed after a great discussion. Three councillors were not in favour of asking for a staff report on this topic. I have received quite a bit of public feedback, with most people in support of HRM moving on from using X (formerly Twitter) to distribute information.

Item 16.1 Councillor Purdy

“Motion: That Halifax Regional Council direct the Chief Administrative Officer to direct staff, as part of the current review of the Integrated Mobility Plan, to undertake a strategic review of how the inverted pyramid of travel modes (Complete Streets Hierarchy, IMP Page 56) is presented and used to guide the updated plan such that it more appropriately addresses true integration of all travel modes and how different areas (urban, suburban and rural) will require different approaches in applying the plan based on the differing geographic and demographic contexts.”

I voted No to this one, as I don’t believe that the physics behind road safety and transportation efficiency vary in different built environments. Often councillors will vote Yes to a staff report and then decide whether they support an idea or not with the additional information provided. I’m trying to be a bit more critical in which staff report requests I vote in favour of. Each report takes up staff time, which means that they are not working on something else.
