Halifax Regional Council – May 13, 2025

Item 1.1 SPECIAL PRESENTATION – CITIZENSHIP AWARDS – 6:00 P.M.

This was a lovely event honouring grade 9 student volunteers across HRM. Congratulations to District 7 recipients Ava Retter (Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Barat Academy) and Anjaly Ajith Radhika (Highland Park Junior High)!

The cover photo for this post features Binny Babu, Administrative Coordinator in the Councillor’s Support Office, with Mayor Fillmore. Binny started with our group in the fall around the same time as the new councillors. She did a great job organizing this event. (Anjaly is featured below.)

Item 15.5.2 Councillor White – Emergency Rescue Service for Stranded Mobility Device Users

Motion:
That Halifax Regional Council direct the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to provide a staff report that considers options for the provision of an emergency rescue service for stranded persons with disabilities due to mobility equipment failure.

This motion originated from D7 resident advocates and a presentation at Accessibility Advisory Committee. If a person is out and about using a mobility device, they are not able to get themselves and their device home in the event of an equipment failure without specialized help. The service gap is complex due to variables like time of day, type of device, ability of the user, and location of the incident. Other stakeholders include device manufacturers and the provincial government. A staff report will present council with options for service enhancements and/or collaboration with other stakeholders. It is important for people who find themselves in this position to know who to call for help in a dignified and equitable manner.

This motion passed 16-1.
